The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) has launched a medical camp in Luwero District as part of the activities leading up to the 44th Tarehe Sita celebrations. Tarehe Sita, meaning “sixth day of the month” in Kiswahili, commemorates the National Resistance Army’s (NRA) attack on Kabamba barracks, marking the beginning of Uganda’s liberation struggle.
This year’s national celebrations will be held on February 6, 2025, in Kyotera District under the theme: “Celebrating Pan-Africanism in Solidarity and People’s Sacrifice in the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy for Socio-Economic Transformation.”
The medical camp, located at Luwero Hospital along the Kampala-Gulu highway, offers various free services, including safe male circumcision and blood donation. Many men have shown interest in the circumcision services. John Kibirige, a resident of Kasiiso village, said, “I plan to undergo the procedure, having heard that it significantly reduces the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.”
Beyond medical services, the UPDF has also engaged in a community cleanup drive. Soldiers have collected and disposed of garbage while clearing drainage trenches in several locations, including Luwero Hospital, Kasana Central Market, Luwero Central Market, Kiwoko Road Junction, Balikyejusa roadside, and Balikyewunya Junction. The exercise is being carried out in collaboration with local police, the prison service, and the leadership of Luwero Town Council.
According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima, 15 additional UPDF medical personnel have joined Luwero Hospital staff to provide health services. The activities will continue across the Greater Luwero region until February 6, culminating in regional celebrations in Nakasongola District.
At the launch, Luwero Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Richard Bwabye commended the UPDF for their community-driven initiatives. Luwero District LC V Chairman Erasto Kibirango praised the cleanup efforts, highlighting their impact on public hygiene.
Brig. Gen. Charles Byanyima, Commander of the UPDF Motorized Infantry Division, reminded officers of Luwero’s historical connection to the army and urged local leaders to inform residents about the government’s ongoing contributions to the community.
