A suspected Ebola patient has died at Tororo General Hospital. Albert Amula, the Tororo Deputy Resident District Commissioner, confirmed that the patient passed away on Monday, January 3, 2025.
According to Amula, the individual was admitted last week with Ebola-like symptoms, including bleeding from body openings such as the ears and anus, as well as fever. The patient’s identity has been withheld to facilitate contact tracing.
Amula stated that more details about the case will be provided once investigations are complete. “The team is gathering more data on the incident, and I will give details later,” he told Uganda Radio Network. At the time of filing this report, the District Health Officer could not be reached for comment.
Last week, Uganda declared an Ebola outbreak after a 32-year-old nurse succumbed to the disease. The Ministry of Health reported that 45 people who had contact with the deceased have been identified. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm, assuring that they are in control of the situation and committed to protecting citizens from the virus.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Uganda’s last Ebola outbreak occurred between September 2022 and January 2023, resulting in 164 confirmed cases and 77 deaths. WHO data also indicates that case fatality rates for the Sudan Ebola virus have ranged from 41% to 100% in past outbreaks.
