The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) has mandated that all pharmacists working in practice settings across the country earn a minimum professional fee of UGX 2 million net per month, effective immediately.
The resolution was passed during the PSU Annual General Meeting held on 26th September 2025 at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala. The society said the move aims to ensure fair remuneration for pharmacists in recognition of their professional services and contribution to Uganda’s healthcare system.
In a circular issued on 30th September 2025, PSU clarified that the UGX 2 million fee represents base remuneration and does not include additional benefits such as transport and housing allowances, medical insurance, professional development grants, performance-based incentives, leave entitlements, or retirement benefits, which employers are encouraged to provide.
Dr. Lutoti Stephen, PSU Secretary, emphasized that pharmacists already on contracts must review and amend them to align with the new standard.
“Members found accepting remuneration below the stipulated minimum shall face suspension from the Society and other disciplinary actions,” Dr. Lutoti warned. The society noted that standardizing fees is intended to safeguard the integrity of the pharmacy profession, retain skilled personnel, and enhance healthcare delivery.
“Fair remuneration of pharmacists contributes to enhanced motivation, better patient care, and overall improvements in Uganda’s healthcare outcomes,” PSU added.
Employers and organizations engaging pharmacists are expected to comply with the directive, which PSU says is anchored in the Pharmacy and Drugs Act Cap 309 and Article 40 of the Constitution of Uganda.
