The Ministry of Health has delivered three solar-powered refrigerators to Kitgum District, a move aimed at strengthening healthcare services, particularly for children.
Dr. Henry Okello Otto, Kitgum District Health Officer, confirmed that the refrigerators will be installed at Loborom Health Center III in Labongo Layamo Sub-county, Omiya Anyima Health Center III, and Akilok Health Center II in Kiteny Sub-county. Previously, these facilities relied on smaller refrigerators with limited storage, often compromising the potency of vaccines.
“The refrigerators will significantly boost our vaccine storage capacity,” Dr. Otto said. “We currently store about 14 vaccines for children, and with these new units, storage will no longer be a problem.”
The solar-powered refrigerators are expected to reduce the impact of frequent power blackouts, a common challenge affecting vaccine storage in many health facilities.
Arwai Christopher Obol, Kitgum District Chairperson, welcomed the delivery, highlighting the benefits for vaccine management.
“This is a big boost to our health department, especially for vaccine storage,” Obol said. “With solar power, we rely less on the national grid and can ensure vaccines remain potent.”
Obol also emphasized proper maintenance to maximize the lifespan of the refrigerators. “We must take good care of these new refrigerators so they serve our community for years to come,” he said.
Joseph Okidi, Kitgum Assistant Resident District Commissioner, urged health officers to restrict the refrigerators’ use to vaccine storage and to safeguard them.
“These refrigerators are meant to protect our vaccines, so let’s handle them with care,” Okidi said. “With enhanced storage capacity, health facilities in the district can now provide better services, particularly for children, ensuring the gains made by the government are protected.”
