Uganda’s supply of family planning commodities remains relatively stable, but shortages and uneven distribution of some contraceptives are creating gaps in access, according to a new Ministry of Health stock-status report.
The Aug. 14, 2026, Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health commodity report shows that most family planning products are available at the national level, with substantial stocks of some long-acting contraceptives.
At the Joint Medical Store, Levoplant had about 31.7 months of stock and Jadelle about 15.3 months, indicating strong supplies of the two long-acting implants.
But some other methods are awaiting replenishment. New orders of Depo-Provera are expected in October, while emergency contraceptive pills are expected in November, according to the report.
Male condoms are already in Uganda but have not yet been released for public distribution because they are undergoing mandatory quality-assurance testing by the National Drug Authority.
The condoms are currently being held at Joint Medical Store and National Medical Stores warehouses. The report projects that they could become available for distribution in September, when supplies are expected to reach about eight months of stock.
The uneven distribution is also visible at health-facility level.
About 23.8% of facilities are completely out of stock of injectable DMPA, while another 37.7% are understocked. At the same time, 30% of facilities report having more DMPA than they need.
Health officials are recommending redistribution between facilities to address the imbalance, moving commodities from facilities with excess supplies to those experiencing stockouts.
Facilities are also being encouraged to use the Online Facility Stock Status Report to provide up-to-date information on their stocks so that replenishment can be targeted where it is most needed.
The report points to a supply-chain problem that is less about the total amount of commodities available and more about where those commodities are when women and families need them.
