The Ministry of Health said the Ebola outbreak in Kampala, activated on May 15, had recorded 11 cases, including two confirmed infections and one death by the end of the reporting week. Two new Ebola cases and one death were reported in the previous seven days. The Rift Valley fever outbreak in Mayuge, declared on May 20, had recorded one confirmed case and one death.
The bulletin also noted that eight suspected viral hemorrhagic fever samples were collected during the week, including six from living patients and two from cadavers. One sample tested positive. Cumulatively, Uganda has collected 106 VHF samples this year, with Kampala accounting for the highest number of samples.
The report highlighted broader surveillance concerns across the country. Health authorities said suspected typhoid and dysentery cases had risen above alert thresholds and warranted further investigation. Uganda also continued to battle multiple outbreaks, including anthrax, measles and mpox. Since July 2024, the country has recorded 8,001 mpox cases and 52 deaths across 121 districts, according to the bulletin.
The Ministry of Health said only eight of Uganda’s 15 regions achieved the national target for completeness in weekly epidemiological reporting, while just five regions met reporting timeliness targets, underscoring continuing surveillance gaps.
