Uganda has reported the highest number of confirmed mpox cases globally in the past six weeks, with up to 300 new cases per week.
A total of 3191 new confirmed mpox cases were reported globally to WHO in February 2025, an 18.2 percent decline from the previous month However, 88 percent of these cases were detected in the African Region.
As of 28 February 2025, the global mpox situation continues to evolve, with a significant focus on Africa. Data from 16 March 2025 provide insights into the epidemiological trends, operational responses, and updates on imported cases as of 21 February 2025.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo remains the most affected country overall, though confirmed cases have declined in recent weeks However, reduced testing makes it unclear whether this reflects a real downward trend Both clade Ia and Ib continue to circulate in the country.
Burundi has shown a consistent decline in confirmed cases, with fewer than 50 new cases per week, down from a peak of over 200 cases per week The country has reported a low case fatality ratio, with one death among 3645 cases.
Brazil, the Republic of Congo, and Tanzania have reported their first cases of mpox due to clade Ib MPXV. The Republic of Congo is the first country outside of the DRC to document co-circulation of both clade Ia and Ib MPXV.
