Philips, a global leader in health technology, has supplied 390 Lumify handheld ultrasound devices to Rwanda’s Imbuto Foundation, a non-governmental organization managing over 20 projects in health, education, and youth empowerment. The initiative, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to transform healthcare delivery across Rwanda, particularly in underserved regions.
The Philips Lumify device combines advanced transducers and an ultrasound app, enabling healthcare professionals to perform diagnostic imaging using compatible smartphones and tablets. Its portable and user-friendly design is especially suited for emergency, critical, and primary care scenarios, including prenatal maternal health.
Joe Harb, Senior Program Officer at the Gates Foundation, emphasized the project’s goal of equipping underserved areas with technology to improve health outcomes. “We are proud to support the development of a stronger and more resilient healthcare system in Rwanda,” Harb noted.
The Lumify device also features tele-ultrasound capabilities, allowing remote consultations between community health workers and specialists. During a patient scan, healthcare professionals can stream live ultrasound images, voice, and video for expert guidance in real-time, making advanced care accessible in rural settings.
Imbuto Foundation’s Deputy Director General for Programmes, Vugayabagabo Jackson, highlighted the initiative’s impact on healthcare delivery. “This partnership reinforces our efforts to enhance access and quality for all Rwandans,” he said.
Following the handover ceremony, Philips organized a “Train the Trainer” session for 20 ultrasound technologists from the Rwanda Biomedical Centre. The training focused on both theoretical and practical aspects of using Lumify devices. These trainers will cascade their knowledge to nurses, midwives, and clinical officers across the country, ensuring widespread adoption of fundamental ultrasound skills.
Eddy Rizk, Business Leader for Ultrasound at Philips META, praised Rwanda’s healthcare advancements, adding, “By providing portable ultrasound devices and comprehensive training, we are improving countless lives.”
Philips, the Imbuto Foundation, and Rwanda’s Ministry of Health will continue working together to ensure healthcare workers have the skills and resources to maximize the devices’ potential, further strengthening Rwanda’s healthcare system.
