The Rotary Past District Governor and Vision Bearer of the Cancer Centre at Nsambya Hospital, Stephen Mwanje, says the complex is on track for completion by 2027.
Mwanje made the remarks during the launch of the 14th edition of the Rotary Cancer Run, scheduled to take place on August 31 at Kololo Independence Grounds.
The 2025 Rotary Cancer Run is themed “Awareness to Personal Action” and was officially launched by Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick on Wednesday.
“We targeted to complete the complex by 2027, and despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, we remain on track. Cancer is a significant burden to our country, and we cannot stop at lamenting. The program focuses on four pillars: creating awareness, providing free screening services, offering infrastructure, and building human resource capacity,” Mwanje said.
He added that after the Cancer Centre complex is completed in 2027, Rotary will focus on equipping the facility and supporting the Uganda Cancer Foundation, which will raise funds to assist those who cannot afford cancer treatment.
This year, Rotary in Uganda aims to raise USD 1 million from the annual Rotary Cancer Run, which has played a crucial role in raising awareness about cancer. Proceeds from previous runs have contributed to the construction of a 36-bed ward and two bunkers housing testing and treatment machines.
Ritah Baraka, Chairperson of the 2025 Cancer Run, announced that this year’s edition will also take place in major cities across Uganda and include mini-runs worldwide. Baraka said Rotary expects 60,000 participants this year.
“Most people are dying because they lack awareness and fail to take action. It’s vital for individuals to act by getting tested, seeking medical attention, and ensuring they stay healthy,” Baraka noted.
Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick commended Uganda’s Rotary Clubs for embodying the spirit of Rotary.
“I understand there is still much to be done, but working together will create significant impact. The progress at the Cancer Centre demonstrates the resilience and determination of Rotary Clubs in Uganda. I will be a goodwill ambassador for this noble cause,” said Urchick.
Freddie Ssengoba, Chairperson of the Nsambya Hospital Board, praised Rotary for its support in cancer treatment, particularly at the hospital, where the Rotary Cancer Run has been the primary financial source for cancer infrastructure.
The Rotary Cancer Centre at Nsambya Hospital was commissioned in 2017.
