Bulemeezi County FC is mourning the death of its player, Rogers Sebyondwa, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a Buganda Kingdom Masaza Cup match against Kyaggwe County FC. Sebyondwa was injured on Sunday, August 2, after colliding with Kyaggwe County FC’s goalkeeper during the group stage fixture at Kasana Sports Ground in Luwero District.
He received first aid on the pitch before being rushed to a nearby health facility. His condition later deteriorated, prompting his transfer to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he died on Wednesday morning. The incident has cast a shadow over this year’s Masaza Cup tournament, with tributes pouring in from the football fraternity.
In a statement, Bulemeezi County FC Media Officer Emmanuel Mugeere described Sebyondwa’s death as a devastating loss to the club. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved player, Rogers Sebyondwa. This is a heartbreaking loss to the entire Bulemeezi family, his teammates, relatives, Masaza supporters and the football fraternity,” Mugeere said.
He said Sebyondwa would be remembered for his commitment, passion and dedication to the team. “His contribution to the club and the memories he created with us will forever remain in our hearts.” A witness at the match, Musa Lwanga, said the player was injured following an accidental collision with Kyaggwe’s goalkeeper during play.
Kyaggwe County FC went on to win the match 1-0, strengthening its position in the Masengere Group, while Bulemeezi’s campaign suffered another setback. Mugeere said Sebyondwa’s body had been transported from Mulago Hospital to Wobulenzi-Kikoma Village and taken to the home of Mzee Kibule. He added that burial arrangements and official tribute programmes would be communicated later.
He appealed to supporters and the public to keep Sebyondwa’s family, teammates and loved ones in their prayers. Before the match, Bulemeezi had registered one win, one draw and three defeats in five matches, including a 1-0 away victory over Busiro County FC on July 19. Sebyondwa’s death has now overshadowed the club’s Masaza Cup campaign and left the wider football community in mourning.
