Police in Lwengo District have arrested Mathias Ssekidde, a private health worker, for allegedly raping a patient at a private health facility in Kyassonko ward, Kisekka sub-county.
Ssekidde, a laboratory technician, was taken into custody on Wednesday after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her during a medical examination. Twaha Kasirye, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect locked his victim in one of the facility’s examination rooms before committing the crime.
According to Kasirye, the victim had visited the facility seeking treatment for stomach complications when Ssekidde recommended a general body checkup. It was during this process that he allegedly took advantage of her. The woman later reported the incident to the police, leading to Ssekidde’s arrest.
Authorities believe there may be more victims and are urging anyone who may have experienced similar abuse to come forward and record statements with the police.
Meanwhile, police have temporarily closed the health facility, citing its failure to ensure the safety and security of patients. Additionally, the Allied Health Professionals Council has been engaged to assess the facility’s suitability for operation before it can be reopened.
Kasirye emphasized the importance of safeguarding patients, stating, “We are investigating whether this was an isolated incident or part of a pattern of abuse. The safety of patients must be a top priority in all health facilities.”
The suspect remains in custody at Kinoni Police Station as investigations continue.
