The Kyabazinga of Busoga, Gabula Nadiope IV, is calling on his subjects to embrace malaria prevention as he prepares to mark his 11th coronation anniversary on September 13, 2025.
This year’s celebrations, themed “A malaria-free Busoga for generations to come,” are more than a ceremonial event. They are a rallying point for communities to adopt preventive measures that could save countless lives.
Richard Mafumo, Busoga Kingdom’s Minister of Cultural Affairs, says the focus comes from the Kyabazinga’s role as the Ministry of Health’s ambassador for malaria eradication. Busoga, he explains, continues to grapple with one of the highest malaria prevalence rates in Uganda, with children under five particularly at risk.
For the past decade, Gabula Nadiope IV has used his platform to champion causes that promote sustainable health and community well-being. This year, the kingdom has set up a select committee to coordinate and fund activities aimed at intensifying malaria prevention. Early reports suggest progress, with communities increasingly adopting measures such as sleeping under treated mosquito nets, clearing bushes, draining stagnant water, early malaria screening, and indoor residual spraying.
“His reign has always been about serving the people,” says Andrew Ntange, the kingdom’s spokesperson. “As he begins a new decade of leadership, it is fitting that he continues to rally communities on the importance of leading healthy lives. Malaria prevention is just one part of that broader mission.”
For Nadiope IV, the anniversary is also an opportunity to reinforce a vision of a healthier, malaria-free Busoga for generations to come.
